"Ninety-five percent of the mountain bikers now--if you're talking top level--are training on their road bikes. It's much easier to get fit on the road because mountain biking can be inconsistent ......"
Henrik Djernis
What happend to the good weather? It was sunny and blue and then the cold fricken hit. There was some talk that it was supposed to snow in the valley, but I don't think it ever did. Coming down from Diablo Grande one after noon I about froze to death in the shadows of the evening. The canyon gets cold too. Ice patches in the turns, the hands hurt, the toes hurt, you shiver on the downhills, pushing harder so you can warm your blood. So it's cold.

Merced Falls - Bear Valley - Old Toll (the route map)
John, Alex and I hit Bear Valley today and I added that we return via Old Toll. Most people don't like Old Toll and Mark even suggested we ride up Old Toll. Hell, that wouldn't be any fun.
I wasn't worried about Old Toll, I was worried about climbing to Bear Valley. I barely made it... pun intended. The best thing about finishing that climb is screaming down the back side. We hit low 50's as we just tucked and pointed the bikes down the back side. That and kicking it by the general store.
It's about 4 miles from the store in Bear Valley to Old Toll. I was looking forward to it. Alex had been dreading Old Toll since he remembered it being a dirt road. I swore to him that it was, in fact, paved the whole way down. I suggested that it may have been poor pavement, but in fact it would be paved.
Old Toll started as I remembered it.
Patched and rough. So rough that it rattled your teeth, numbed your hands, and had you questioning the reason you bought those light bars and stem. But when it really gets bad is after the easy climb in the middle where you peak and then start a screaming downhill run. But what did we find.......
Freshly paved road. Doh!!!
Luckily, at the very end was an old section of road that rattled a few bones. Alex hands were numb and John was giggling at the run. From there we just road back to Hornitoes and off back to the cars at Merced Falls.
One more for Alex.
We weren't the only ones riding.
Fred and a big crew pre-road the Sea Otter Classic XC course. With pictures and everying. Looks like someone had to be stitched up after the ride.
More good Google stuff
If you haven't clicked on the road map links you should check out the Gmap Pedometer link. You can route out your favorite road rides and it'll save the map and give you the millage.

Physical Therapy
I've been going to Therapy for a few weeks now and I can say I'm feeling better. There are still some times when my back acts up but overall it's been good. I still have a few session left but I'm going to keep working on my core strengths and flexibility.
I rode the road bike on Sunday with Chris and Big John and then also a short road ride on Tuseday. Usually I'd get off the bike and I wouldn't be able to stand up straight for a few minutes until everthing loosed up. Both times my legs felt tired, but I wasn't hunched over as before. I take that as a good sign. I'm gong to try to get another short ride in Thursday if I can.
Sea Otter Pre Ride
Looks like Fred is getting a group together to pre-ride the new Sea Otter course. Watch for details. This is the best map information we have at this time.
It's just a few weeks away. It's going to be huge. I'm planning on watching one of the San Jose stages. The time trial looks interesting.
Other local datse of importance.

Something else I got today......
Subject: [DA] China Camp is Destroyed!
A-Bomb and I went for a ride last night at China Camp.
After Adams ride up from the city and tinkering at our cars for a bit getting ready we were disappointed to see the yellow tape and sign saying China Camp trails are closed!
That’s wasn’t stopping us. Were adventure racers after all. So we continued in the road to the camp area and found a trailhead that didn’t have a do not enter sign figuring we can just say we didn’t see one. A but further up the trail the giant landslide that took fully upright trees landing in middle of trial should have been a sign, but nope, we just hike a biked right over the top as if it want there. Hopefully these pictures attached will illustrate how crazy it is out there now. It probably wont reopen for along time. There going to need some serious machinery to fix this place up!

Here are some of the pics......

Like I said earlier, it's going to be a flood year. I wonder how hard the trails will be hit through this winter.
And one last thing.....
Pictures from the Red Hills ride in the rain.

The Die Hard Ride Hard
It's been raining for 2 weeks but that didn't stop Fred and a bunch of hard asses out in Red Hills.
Well, of course, you all missed the best ride ever.
Roll call: Dennis, Char, Mark D. Mark R. and Jim (from Sac) and me. The weather wasn't too cold. Can't say it wasn't wet though. Very wet. We were riding most the time in streams but traction was excellent and very little mud.
A broken derailer sent me to the truck a little early but I had a back up ride and met up with the group in time for the Soaproot downhill.
Brauts, beer and Baker cookies topped off the day.
'till the next one- Fred
You've seen the weather... that's dedication.
New Year and New Start
I finally got over to see the doctor about my back problems and I'll be starting physical therapy this week. In keep with the theme of starting over I took apart the Blur for some long overdue maintenance. Strip it down completely and comenced to take apart the linkages to check the bearings. The bearings are all OK but I have a cracked linkage.

I'll give Gary a call tomorrow to see about getting a new one. I can put everything else back together and save the linkage for last. Then I can work on the Biancchi. Maybe in time for the Early Birds.
Cyclist Killed in Storm
Dan Plummer from Team Spine was killed when a tree fell on him. The tree was knocked over by the storm.
