It feels good to ride again.  I just wanted to say that.

12 Hours of Humboldt

Yeah baby,

Joseph, pimpy and i hit the podium grasping 3rd place Saturday nite
at the conclusion of the race with 9 laps total in the 3 man,
beginner mens category. The race was really a means for some of us to
get better at endurance events and get some serious saddle time.

The course was 9 mile with 1800 ft of climbing on each lap. So for
every lile you climbed 200'. The climbing was fricking brutal. About
2/3 of the 9 mile lap was climbing. With the climbs being a mixed bag
of fire roads with brutal grunts mixed in with gradual fireroad
climbs. The descents were a mix of technical & flowing haulass
singletrack and fireroads. One section was navigating down a steep
pitch with 4 to 5' water bars and mud. While the others where flowing
fast singletrack amoungest the trees.

Wanna thank pimpy, joseph and jenny for the support, team effort
(thers no "I" in team Joeseph), help and LAUGHS during not only the
vent but all weekend.

Peace

John

Flume Ride Photos

I almost missed when Gary C. posted these.  If you're not on the Trogs email list, I don't think you can see them.  It's not hard to join the list.  Just click the Yahoo Groups link at the top.

Speaking of Bear Valley

From Alex

Hey all,

I'll be going up to Bear Valley this Friday to Saturday the 21st.

Camping under the stars up at Cape Horn next to the beginning of the down hill.

The ride, on Saturday I'll start at about 10am right out of my door step! I'll take this all the way past the slick rock jeep trail and all the way down to that camp ground just past the bridge I forget what the hell it's called but those of you that have ever been there know where I talking about.

I'll more than likely get a shuttle style ride going since the "old lady" will be going along but she won't be riding. So if any of you wish to come up just call me at:

765-0188 cell I'll have it on just in case.

I'll also be monitoring The TROGS channel 5.5 GMRS/FRS radio.

 See ya there . . .

That's enough for now...

Bike Shop Matt Podiums Northstar

Next time you're in Cyclemasters and see Matt wrenching on a bike.  Give him a pat on the back for winning the beginners men downhill competition at Northstar this weekend.  It was his second race ever.  He won by 27 seconds even after he crashed during his run.  Good job Matt.

Picture Catch up

I've been promising to link to all the pictures of the trips everyone and rides everyone's been taking.  Here they are.

If you're creative, and can take a good picture, you can win a Juan Solo SS from Salsa Cycles.

Write a Letter for IMBA

Hopefully some of you got a chance to ride Grouse Ridge last week with the IMBA crew.  They're asking for you to write a letter or two to help keep these great trails open.

Quick note

Impy and Al have returned from a road trip to the northwest and they have tons of great pictures to share.  Watch for them tomorrow.  I don't have time to set up the links since I'm getting ready for my first dirt ride in 4 weeks.

Hincapie Recognized

I think we all saw the "Most Valuable Domestique" commercial during the Tour where Cliff Bar asked you to vote for those that don't always get recognized for their effort.  While Hincapie is the man, I don't necessarily agree with the choice.  I didn't vote so I guess I can't say much.

Mtbr Jersey

If you've ever wanted an mtbr.com jersey they are now available.  I've had one for years now and people have been asking for them and they're now available again.  Maybe one day we can get a Trogs jersey designed and produced.  Now those would be must have items.

IMBA Wild Ride

Did you miss the Grouse Ridge ride?  Here is a little taste of it courtesy of Finch Platte.

Cyclecyde

Last week JRM and I went to the Tour de Fat to check out the beers, bikes, and bands.  I finally got the pictures uploaded if you want to check them out.  The Cyclecyde guys and gals put on a crazy show with flaming bikes and bike jousts and all around crazy bike stuff.  I also got a couple little vids from the toys they had built up.  All pedal powered.

Georgie Hincappie signs with Discovery

Three more years for George and I hear they're hiring some backup for him in the classics.

Aug 4

Long time sine the last update.  I spent 4 days in Tahoe and like a loser, I didn't do any riding.  I'm not fully recovered and was spending the trip with the family.  I did manage to win a Hold 'Em Tournament that pretty much paid for the trip.  I'm really eager to get back on the bike though.

Local News

Dave Fuentes is a local pro rider.  He made cycling news in a bad way.  That's really too bad.  We'll see what comes of it as the story develops.

Ride Report

Last weeks ride to Pinball provided mixed results.  Pinball is a killer trail and it looked to be over some people's heads.  Here's Ogre's report:

Well, Pinball had some oddly mixed reactions, more mixed than any ride I've been on. It was also a bad day for mechanicals. Everyone showed up pretty much on time, it was Ogre, John P, Matt (the Roadie) Schwinn, Joseph, Mark Day (The Suprise Trog), and three of my non-Trog friends,
Eric, Danny, and Kelly.

The mechanicals started right off the bat, as Eric was taking his bike off out of his truck something happened (we're not quite certain what) and when he hopped on his bike and started pedaling his bike ate his derailuer. It was a complete loss and the chain was chewed up too.  Fortunately Char's bike was there since we had been camping the night before and so we yanked the derailer off of it and Matt, Joseph, and Danny managed to wrench it into almost working order. Eric was stuck with only the two lowest speeds on the rear cassette, and the granny and middle ring on the front, marginally a 4 speed bike.

We rolled across the dam and along the fireroad and some how Matt and John got separated from the group when they missed a hard to see turn and sneak ahead of us. 15 minutes later we managed to hook back up with them and we were on our way.

We took the grinding fireroad climb up to the top and then had a little rock climb contest up the first section of singletrack. The first 1/2 mile or so of Pinball is Hike-a-Bike over loose rocky trails and is definitely work. But eventually you get to some good quality singletrack which more or less weaves in and out through some trees. I think everyone enjoyed the singletrack in the trees but it was pretty short.

Then we started on the alien landscape. This is where the really mixed reactions came in. Our group broke into two smaller groups, Joseph, Mark, Matt, Danny and I were ripping through this stuff and having a ball while John, Eric and Kelly picked through it and never got into the
flow of things. The trail is cut into a lava flow and is some of the roughest, most bizarre trail anywhere. It's all technical, but strangely flowy once you get into it but the folks who weren't able to get a rhythm going just hated it.

A few more short hiking sections and then we got a bit mixed up, and missed our turn off at trail 18 and hit some fireroads. I wanted to do a bit of 'sploring but the consensus seemed to point us downhill and Matt was out of water so we pointed down until we hit trail 20 which intersected the path that George had taken us onto originally. Trail 20 is a curious mix of fun buffed singletrack and short steep (often hike-a-bike) climbs. This was our next mechanical, Joseph's frame cracked. So the rest of us rolled and Joseph finished the day with a
hike. Fortunately not much trail left.

Shortly we were back at the car drinking beer and waiting for Joseph. Then we piled in and enjoyed a great burger (or veggies) and some good company at the burger/ Video store in Mi Wuk village. So the score for the day was 4 votes for killer, must repeat ride, 3 votes for not repeat and one abstaining. I do think that we need to do a bit more 'sploring around the top and see if we can lengthen the ride a bit, when we were done we had only ridden about 12-14 miles and I just wanted a bit more
distance.

So I am proposing the TROGS Pinecrest/ Pinball camping weekend. Camp at Pinecrest Friday and Saturday, ride Hamill Canyon and do some trail maintenance on Friday Night. Ride Hamill Canyon and Pinecrest (twice) on Saturday, and then ride Pinball and do some 'sploring on Sunday.  Folks who can't camp can join in the festivities as they are available.  Perhaps on the 28th and 29th of August???

This would also give Impy and some of the Bay area folks a chance to  spend a bit of time exploring some trails which are a bit far for a day trip but are a blast.

New Frame Material

Forget Carbon Fiber, the new revolutionary frame material is here.

Two Hundred Miles

Have you ever ridden a century?  How about a double century?  Well, how about a double century on a fixie?  Didn't think so.

One Last Thing!!

If you enjoy watching grand tours on OLN, then you might want to fill out this online petition.  OLN is not planning on showing the Vuelta as it showed the Giro and Tour.  That can't be right.
