Road Rides

Stumbled across this collection of maps and route descriptions. It's a collection of local loops with profiles and maps assembled by John Gerling. I'm not sure if I've ever ridden with John but it's a very nice resource.

November 24th

The day after

It was a gathering of the old and young, but the annual Thanksgiving Day dry creek ride had all the regulars there. People I only see maybe once a year, but they show up on Thanksgiving. The Trog himself, Roger, Auggie Lisa and family, Kevin Key and his tribe of girls, Dave and his DH Cycles family, Scott O., Steve, Gary +1, Matt, George H., the Randles, Curtis, John, Ferrister and kid, Joe, and so many more. I'm only ashamed that I don't know everyone's name, and worst of all, the camara died after taking only 2 pictures.

There were many 'old timers' and many 'new timers', and what the newbies didn't know was that there is grub after the ride. Everyone really appreciated the baked ham!! I'm again unable to give proper thanks since I do not know the names of the family that goes the extra mile every year with the ham. You know who you are and you guys rock!

Thanksgiving Day Ride

I heard Bob say they were talking about this ride on the local radio. Amazing how word travels.

.

Landis comes out swinging.

On Friday Dr. Arnie Baker, a retired doctor, coach and longtime friend of former Phonak team leader Floyd Landis, presented to an audience in Tucson, Arizona, a slideshow arguing against the doping charges that could strip Landis of his 2006 Tour de France win. Friday's presentation at the Tucson Convention Center, the starting point of Saturday's El Tour de Tucson event, was an updated version of a previous slideshow that Baker unveiled in California last month.

Lance to Ride Leadville

Lance Armstrong has different ideas about retirement than the average person. Between his work fighting cancer with the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a recent partnership with 24 Hours of Fitness Sports Clubs, and a sub-three hour finish at the New York City Marathon two weeks ago, the seven-time Tour de France champ is keeping pretty busy.

Now you can add the grueling, high-altitude Leadville 100 Mountain Bike race to Lance's to-do list for 2007.

November 18th

I'm slow but it get's there.

Some of you have been following Fred's daughter, Brittney, battle with Leuiemia. Brittney went home Friday and that's great news. Behind the scenes, people have been working to get a gift of a custom pink bike with pink wheels. A really tricked out sweet ride. I have a lot of links over on the side so you can read up on what's going on. Also look for a Randle Family Fun ride coming in Spring.

The rain could not stop the Jump Jam.

Cold, wind, rain, sun, then more rain, but the jumping continued. Net a lot of new people and all the regulars, no bikes were broken and no bones were broken, beer was drank, food was cooked, and music was blasted.

And the rest of the pictures.

November 9

Last minute Jump Jam info.

From Steve Delay

Hi Everyone- We are just 48 hours away from Matt Nascimento's 3rd Annual Jump Jam and yearly SWD Party/BBQ. The event will again be held on Matt's cattle ranch/dairy property near Turlock CA. The location is about 10-15 minutes south of Modesto, off of highway 99.

The party will be held THIS Saturday, day-after-tomorrow! Matt is expecting people to begin showing up fairly early and basicly the party and dirt jumping will roll along all-day. T

he BBQ usually happens later in the afternoon. Every year we usually get tons of great photos and some video of the days riding and you can always find a report and pics on George Crawford's "TROGS" website, in addition to our own SWD Racing website of course.

So, if there is a beer you like to drink or something you like to throw on the BBQ, bring it and be there! The directions are once again, if traveling south on highway 99, as in coming from the bay area or Sacramento area's, you will exit onto the Keyes Rd. off-ramp. At the top, go left and drive down over the freeway. At the bottom you will be at the intersection of Golden State, with a 76-station on your right side.

Turn right onto Golden State.

You will curve around for about a quarter of a mile and look for the first main road on your left, called Barnhardt Rd.

Turn left onto Barnhardt Rd. and drive about a 1/2-mile, look for a sign on the right side of the road and you are there.

When you see a small cattle corral and a huge pile of hay, you will be there. Turn onto the dirt path and the jumps/hangout spot is directly behind the cattle corral.

Ok, I hope to see you all there for a fun day of bikes, BBQ and beers and even if you are not a dirt jumper, the day is fun to just hangout, BS and talk bikes.

Sincerely, Steve DeLay

Even if you're a stranger, you're welcome to come by and say, "Hi." I haven't seen the new stuff Matt has been builiding, but all I hear is that it's "Big."

.

Well since I bothered to post, looks like the news of the day is about Basso's move to Discovery. Oh how I long for a good Tour. Drama that doesn't involve doping and people getting thrown out.

.

Look what I found!

Some older Groovy Gravity Games footage by Pete Fagerline.  I wonder if he knows he stuff is on YouTube?

.

Well, since I'm on You Tube, here's a clip from Downiville 2006.

.

The things you find.

Ok, so you passed up all the other YouTube clibs, but you can't pass up this one.

A fricken "Swing Bike", I guess this really was a bike availabe in the '70's. I was there, but I don't remember these. No one around me growing up had one, all I remember is the Big Wheel.

A little searching turns up a bunch of links

Let's see if I can keep up with the updates.

.

November 5

Really slow on the updates....

Suddenly life gets busy. It's going to be slow on the updates for at least another month. Going back to college really eats into the time you have. Any time on the computer has mostly been spent writing papers and working on projects. Well, winter break is almost here so maybe I can update then.

Until then, here are a few small things that are happening in the area.

.

Matt's 3rd Annual Jump Jam, November 11th

Matt's been busy again and he's been moving dirt and getting ready for another jump jam. Bikes, beers, and bbq are all planned. Matt's even been welding together some medals for the winners. All the SWD Racing boys should be out there, it should be fun.

.

Veloswap, November 18th.

I'm sure a lot of Trogs will be going. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. The first couple of years it was a good swap, full of a lot of old stuff but last year it just seemed like it was a bunch of bike shops getting rid of their stuff.

A little bad news

The Red Bull Road Rage seems have been canceled this year.

Signing off

The last little bit for a while, since winter is coming....

October 8

If you haven't gone to Specialized Movies yet, then do. They have two cool movies on there. I really dig the Outlaw in Lycra.

Vision Quest...

If you're ever considering riding this thing, you should apply now.

The Cycling Season is not over yet.

But many people are already planning for the winter. Here is a short little article on preventing burnout.

Maybe it's time to try Cyclocross?

I'm not talking about me trying Cyclocross. Just if you're interested.

October 2

Vegas and other debautchery

First off, lots of pictures.

Interbikeis an interesting experience. It's big with herds of people everywhere.

It's so big it's hard to fathom and really does take multiple days to see everything.... maybe. It was good to see the boys at the Voodoo booth again this year, and my man Anthony was busy dealing poker again.

Voodoo was giving away a frame and there were a couple people from our crew at the final table but no one won.

The Voodoo guys are really cool and maybe one day we can get out to Flagstaff to ride with those mokes.

I ran into Collette and Al, working the 29'er booth.

Here they are hiding out and grubbing in the secret area behind the curtains. The great and mighty Oz was a little ways around the corner but he didn't take kindly to photos. I only had a couple moments to talk to Impy since she was off back to LA shortly after we talked.

I didn't realize that Niner was making FS bikes now. The things you learn at Interbike. Anyway, I'm kind of in the market for a new dirt rider and while the Niner was interesting, what really had me spinning was Felt's entry into the FS market.

There is a lot of buzz about this bike. See the red link parallel to the seat tube.

The Equalink is the key, I don't know how much is hype or real inovation but I'm watching for the reviews. Matt N. and I tried to get a really good look at this thing so we started to play with the frame displayed on the stand. I wanted to see the frame in action but I couldn't because of the preasure from the shock..... so what did I do? I let the air out of the shock of course.

First we let the main chamber air out and then realized that there was a negative air chamer too, so I let that one out. All chambers were empty, and we still couldn't get the frame to move through it's travel. So we gave up and headed for the bike to do the same thing.

At this point on of the Felt booth workers came to talk to us about the frame and he began his hard pitch. I had not time for this so I kind of just told him.... "I want to see the travel in action." He explained that the bike on the stand wouldn't move easily because of the stand. We then mentioned that we took the air out of the frame on the stand and couldn't get it to move either..... he wasn't happy to hear that we were fucking with his product, but as soon as he realized that Cycle Masters was a Felt dealer he perked right up.

Now, you may not know it, but I have a history of breaking shit at Interbike. Two years ago I mangled an internal gear box at the Hayes booth... (I think it was Hayes). The gear box was displayed opened up so you could see how it worked internally, the designers were claiming how tough it was, it was really cool and was open for display.

Well, if you give me a toy like that, I'm going to play with it and after at bit, I had jammed the crap out of it. Don't ask me how, I just worked it. Soon after I jammed it, the gear box disapeared to be unjammed, but as far as I can tell, it never came back out for display. I guess it wasn't as tough as they thought it was.

Besides checking out all the bikes, every night there is some sort of video primere or party.

Wednesday night we went to the Ice House bar to watch some video primere. It was packed and they were tossing product.

John felt cheated during the beer chugging contest but the place was so loud and packed it was hard to tell. The video was cool as hell and the Ice House bar was interesting, there's nothing like going to the bathroom and having someone standing around to give you a squirt of soap and a wash cloth.

On Wednesday we went to another video primere at the Palms, it started out really good but then I got bored and went to play poker. After that we went across the street to the Sinclair Party at the Rio.

There I had a cool run in on the way to the Voodoo Lounge. We were trying to figure out how to get to the actual lounge. Gary headed one way, Matt, John and I tought it was another so finally a group walked past us and I asked a guy.... "Hey, which way is the Voodoo Lounge?" then came to the instant realization, "Oh Crap, you're George Hincape."

He said, "Oh yeah, What's up?" and then walked away with his crew. We followed him to the Voodoo lounge and preceded to drink and check out the surounds.

As nice as the Voodoo Lounge is, it's not reall my scene since you can only go so far with $12 drinks, so we bailed and headed for the Double Down Salloon where John from Voodoo was playing. His band the Shindaggers was starting around midnight.

Now this is more my speed with $2 beers and drinks called "Ass Juice". I ordered a round of Ass Juice for everyone and Shlitz to chase it. It was fricken loud and fast and the room smelled of spilled alcahol and cigarettes. The only think left to do was hit up the bartender for a Bacon Martinni... I pussed out and stuck with the ass juice.

By the time Thursday rolled around we were spent. We hit the room to clean up before going out for the night and suddenly the bed felt sooooo good. The next thing you knew I was fast asleep.

Friday was the last day to see the bikes, visit with Voodoo boys, and have some drinks. Three days is nowhere enough time to do everything you can do in Vegas and if you try to do it all you end up just tired as hell.

Every year gets better and I'm already marking my calendar for next year.

.

Well, that's enough of that.

.

From Fred

I finally ventured out to explore the local single track offerings in my latest home-away-from-home, San Francisco. I spent several mornings exploring everthing in Golden Gate Park that had a dirt gap between some trees and bushes. There are a few little areas that make you bob, weave and duck, but as you might expect, nothing with any pucker rating.

Yesterday morning I only had time for a quick ride. I thought I'd climb the paved road behind UCSF up Mt Sutro. Got a nice sweat going on, went around some gates to the top and found a wide gravel trail that narrowed down into some very sweet, tight single track with a few roots and small drops. The trail forked off several different places I'd get to explore later.

I went back up Mt . Sutro this morning. This time I was able to climb up the single track I had decended yesterday. The other single track didn't produce much more, but it spark a little excitement to be offroad.

I know this doesn't even compare to Pinecrest and Eagle Creek. But today, it was the best ride ever.-Fred
