My crazy idea
02/22/09 at 18:13:56

I want to hold a race.

Kind of like the SF Flow we did a few months ago, but on our own territory and set up a little bit differently.

First at Red Hills, and then later in the summer at Pinecrest Peak.

Have various check points set up in the trail system.  Some easy to get too, some harder.

Harder checkpoints would be worth more points than easier checkpoints.

You only have to hit the check points you want, but there would be a time limit.  You go for too many checkpoints and come back after the limit.... no points.  Each rider would have to decide which ones, how many and how to get the to the checkpoints the quickest based on their knowledge of the area and how strong of a rider they were.

The winner is the one with the most points who makes it back within the time limit.  In case of a tie in points, you go to time to decide.

Think this would be doable and fun?

It would require some people to set up and promote... but I think it would be a lot of fun.

I like the idea. The Flow was a lot of fun.

How do you think  competitive crazed bikers would mix with the horse people at RH?

I don't know.  We'd just have to make sure to emphasize at the start, that everyone needs to give the horses the right of way.

How many people do you think would show up for something like this.

To really pull this off, I would need some Trogs to volunteer to help.

D Point would be a great place, and obscure. Lots off different routes.

Agreed. It would have to be strictly on lows. An organized event would require insurance if the state got wind of it.

Yeah, I'm not sure how it'd look to the ranger if a bunch of people showed up one day over running the park.

darn... D Point would be good.  But we ain't getting insurance.

There are a lot of underground events happening and I've had more fun at these than most 'organized' big events I've ever participated in years.

I'd say D Point is the way to go. You could try to go "stealth" as much as possible and try to make it as "underground" as possible. Even if the Ranger's did catch wind, they've got other things to do, like feed big kitty's. We could start with local Trogs, friends and family (not to feed the kitty, but for event).

We could also do Melones...lots of parking and opportunities for course options.

I don't see Melones being that good.  It just doesn't have as many trail options or challenges.  Part of the challenge is navigating through the web of trails and figuring out the best route to get it done.

Melones is too limited in that fact.

I put 5 or 6 check points in Melones, there is only one basic route to hit them all...  if I put 5 or 6 check points up in Red Hills....  you have to decide which way is the best route to take to hit them in the given time.  Do you go east side first?  West side first?  Do you climb the nasty route, or go around to the less nasty route?

A note on checkpoints.

I'm going to need checkpoint volunteers...  one thing about check points, is that you can set them up as tasks also.

Require racers/riders to do something to earn the checkpoint...  the more creative the better.

Due to a crazy upcoming schedule of other things non cycling related, I likely will not be able to take part (I am slow anyway) or commit to volunteering.

However, I am up at Redhills quite a bit (live in Oakdale) and am wondering what everyone thinks about me possibly talking to some of the local equestrian crowd about their feelings regarding TROGS putting on such an event.

I know that there aren't any set rules up there, but I worry that this may cause some un-needed friction if we don't get the blessing from some of the regulars.  In the event that their posture seems a little negative, maybe we could make it a night race or pick a time when there won't be many horses on the trail.

I am not trying to be pushy, but i sure would like to keep the peace in that area (for purely selfish reasons  Grin)

Please let me know.

Josh

FYI, I have 20' self contained travel trailer that may be useful for these type of events in the future. (BASE CAMP)

I like the idea of a "what-a-coincidence-a-bunch -of-bikers-riding-D Point-at the same time" underground ride. Even the check points would have to somewhat discrete for non participants.

I would prefer D Point over RH. The trails are better suited for traffic. If someone does upset an equestrian, it's not any of the locals we see every week at RH. D Point would be a little closer for Bay area riders.
