Eye to eye for a 6 gun?
01/23/09 at 23:53:30

the 6 gun i bought used came with a dhx 5 air, which is super soft because of the leverage ratio of the frame, and i need to get a dhx 5 coil.
what is the eye to eye for the shock?

if you still have the dhx air, you can measure it.  you might also try sending the dhx air back to fox and have them change the air can to a rp23.  i believe that helps alot.  you should email or pm milkman on this forum.  he had them change air can on his dhx air shock.

Follow Gary's advice and contact Fox.  The DHX Air (stock) doesn't work very well because it doesn't ramp up enough at the end to prevent bottom out.  Otherwise, you have to run so much pressure that the small bump response isn't there at all.  So yes, Fox can swap the can to a smaller one that will allow it to be more progressive at the end of the stroke and still maintain the small bump softness you'd want in that kind of bike.

Todd you may need to learn me here, but i always thought that the 6 GUN had a medium to low lever ratio. The shock stroke is 3" and the rear tire travels 6". Is that a 2:1 ratio? compared to the old Intense bikes that had a 3" stroke shock and like 8" of travel. Is it the lever ratio or the suspension cycle that makes certian shocks work with certian suspension set ups?

Yo, Taco!  Actually, the 216 frames have a 3" stroke rear shock.  I believe the 6 Gun has a 2.25", so it's closer to 2.6:1.  However, the angle of the shock inside the frame can play a part in the leverage as well, but the stroke and overall travel does give you the ballpark ratio.  Leverage ratio, shock angle, rising/falling rates, etc. all affect how a particular shock will behave on any given frame.  The guy you really want to ask is Justin Frey or Hank Matheson.  Those two know their sh*t when it comes to suspension and frame design!

No, it's 7.5x2.0. The measurements are close so its easy to rack your brain when putting a tape measure on the shock.

And by the way that "dance with the devil" song is crazy, I dig it, tells a good story.
