any weekday riders out there?
09/18/08 at 12:43:36

Just moved to oakdale from VT and am looking for riding partners, clubs, trail work etc that I can jump in on- I am self employed, and typically can ride any weekday between 7:30 and noon...I appreciate any info or invites to get back on the dirt- anything to save me from road riding!

Welcome Kyle, I can't do any weekday rides but your welcome to join in on the weekend rides ,if you can.

Have you heard of , or been to, Red Hills yet? It's east of Oakdale just off 108. It's kind of an acquired taste, loose rocky and steep but ridable anytime throughout the winter, storms included.

I heading up to the Sierra's on Hwy 4 Sat. morn.  I'll be passing through Oakdale 6:30ish. Be back in town around 5-6. You welcome to join in.

thanks Fred, have not been to red hills yet...Am itching to try it out! VT trails were wet, rocky, and root strewn, so I'm looking forward to anything that is DRY! (does not appear to be a problem here) Thank you so much for the invite for saturday! I'm afraid I have a family commitment all day, but am around all of sunday...pleas let me know next time you head out!

Is red hills a place you could ride alone (with common sense intact) and not die? How about dogs? Mine is a total trail dog and is as anxious to get out as I am..

I am really psyched to find you you guys and this group!

I'm new to the trail dog thing. Here's a thread from last winter. http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=379568

Red Hills was perfect for her. It's slow going up and down for me, so she's good for about 15 miles there.

We went to a faster less technical place, Glory Hole at Melones Res, and she was done after 4 miles.

I didn't bring her out at all this summer due to fear of her getting snake bit.

We'll definitely have to get them together.

Make sure to start at the Parking Area on Red Hills Rd, that provides access to the most trails.

Red Hills isn't that big of an area but you can get turned around since everything looks the same.  Rocks and scrub and hills.

This is a combination trail map and Google Earth overlay with gps routes on it.  The newer trails are not on the park map but you can see the gps marks, I did include preferred directions on the map.

You can go an explore, just don't go out on the hottest days, there is no water, they do have a couple pit toilets at the main parking area.

George, FYI the "New Trail" at the top(north end) is *clear throat* no bikey  Roll Eyes

We wouldn't want the horse people complaining of bikes tearing up the trails   Grin

I ride mostly up the hill near Pinecrest and usually midweek.  I've been busy lately and haven't done much riding, but one of these days...  I may be a bit older, but I know every trail up here.  More trails than Downieville, less crowded than Tahoe and the best hidden slickrock this side of Moab.  If we could just convert the equestrians to bikes...
