Ok, so here's the ride I want to do...

Ride from Double Dome down to Donnell Reservoir.

Ok, so it's a shuttle run with tons of driving and you need high clearance. meh

Is double dome the same as the Dome Trail that starts near the Gargoyles?

Can you do the run on as a majority singletrack run or is it a lot of fire road DH?

nah, look at "Milos Run" it is shown on there.  Ride from there to 108 and cross and drop down into 5n06 area and there is an old abandoned road down to the river.

You can do a loop with that old jeep trail using 5N09X (misslabled on some maps).  Thats the road that parallels the river.  Then you climb up 4N95 and can follow roads, old RR grades and pieces of the old highway back up to 5N06.  It's mostly an XC cruise ride except for the abandoned jeep trail dropping into the canyon.  I cleaned it out last fall and it has some washouts, rockslides, and some fairly rough areas, but it's mostly rideable and has some nice scenery.  The most practical way to link to Double Dome would be to ride Niagara Rim jeep trail from Double Dome either direction and link into Eagle Meadow road via several options, the best perhaps using the OHV trail down from Niagara OHV camp, and then to the highway, and cross the highway to a little unmarked road that ties into 5N06.  Of course, it's all covered with snow now.

George who drew the "a dog drew this" maps of 108 ? I like the way they look, easy to read.  Were they hand drawn or done on a computer.  I am making a tiny guide book for a couple of my family members and friends of the Bear Valley area.  I would like to do about the same thing.   Jeff

I found those somewhere.. some guy Milo had posted them online but you had to dl a program to view them...  I converted them to .pdf files so more people could view them without having to dl anything special.

It was a guy who lived in the area, but I believe moved away and now his website is gone.  Actually, his dog's name was Millo which he named the Eagle Creek loop after and he joked that his dog drew the maps and wrote the discriptions.  The maps had to come out some time after I cleared a trail on the north side of the Stanislaus River to make the whole loop, which was in the mid to late 90's.  I'm sure his maps came after 2000.  I think he nailed washers on trees and painted them red to mark the route and he also rerouted that trail a little bit to a better creek crossing.  I think he also built the hike-a-bike trail under Double Dome which was originally a cross country bike carry.

Thanks for the maps! Managed to get to a few rides in the mornings and/or evenings of the 4th weekend, while hanging out with some local friends (climbers not bikers), camped up towards Crabtree then at a friends place in Twain Harte.

Did Contour from Crabtree, Ridge, Redwood, below Redwood. Fun ride, Contour is pretty horse dusty but really not too bad at all for a trail between 2 horse camps. Ridge & Redwood & below were FUN!

Then tried to blast down PCP in the evening of the 4th after rock climbing up past Coyote meadows - trying to get down really fast to meet up with baby & mommy who drove down. After that ugly but short climb to get up the jeep/ATV road from the Coyote meadows trailhead, I wisely decided to save time and just head up the lower road instead of the top of Pinecrest peak.

Warned by the one "hard to find the top" post, I watched bike tracks carefully and found the top of the trail at the old overlook. Then I proceeded to "go fast" down the trail...hah! I should have been warned by the "armor" comments (considering I don't have armor, nor have I ever biked with anyone with armor). I saw the trail take off to the right up high, and assumed it was a short trials section, but didn't see it come back in, so I obviously missed the newer trail. Took the right at the little pond to stay in the right drainage, then the right at the other ponds (where the trail is blocked by piles of sticks to keep hikers going back to Pinecrest). The old trail was plenty for me, and a whole lot of walking was involved especially in that last section near Strawberry. I rode a whole lot of hard-for-me stuff - years of riding rocks in the late '80s/early '90s with no suspension - but being alone, with a semi-bum knee (MCL, other pain from dislocated kneecap a few weeks ago), no idea what armor even is, and with darkness not all that far off, I wasn't exactly tearing it up.

I assume people have bash-guards for those lower rock gardens? I can't imagine getting through any of that with the big gear ring intact...

Last day on the way back from Burst Rock, tried to find Moraine and failed on the upper part. Found it near the road, tried a couple sections, but just too hard for tired, end-of-the-day, meet the family in a few more minutes down in Pinecrest type riding. Backtracked and took the road.

No worries on me riding around obstacles and mellowing out the trails - if you have to ride around, I walk - if I'm not good enough for the trail, no need to trash it. I'll be back sooner or later to try Moraine and others...maybe after I figure out armor, bash-guards, and partners a bit better. Not to mention leaving a bit more time for a ride!

Thanks again for the info - turned an otherwise pretty boring trip (knee kept me from rock climbing so I was hanging around, being sherpa and baby sitter) into a fun weekend!
